Excessive Blinking - What does it mean?

We know that excessive eye blinking is typically a sign of stress.  When combined with other facial and language clues, these eye movements can be even more telling.

I decided to do this post after watching last Sunday's Meet the Press and in particular the excessive eye blinking of House Leader Eric Cantor. Cantor combines excessive eye blinking with raised "Driver" brows.

Expressives and Drivers often raise their eyebrows, accentuating lines across the forehead. You can tell the difference between a Driver and an Expressive by their eyes. When Drivers raise their brows, the eyes tend to stay small. When Expressives do it, the eyes are much bigger.  See the picture on the left? Compare that one to Eric Cantor. Now look at the lines across the forehead. Notice that Cantor's are relatively straight, while the man on the left has a "V" with arches over each brow.

So we know that Cantor is a Driver and feeling a bit of stress. That's natural for someone being interviewed. What else can we surmise?  Let's take a look at body language research in this area and see what we can find.

Consensus on excessive blinking:

  1. Blink rate tends to increase when people are uncomfortable or feeling stressed.
  2. Some feel excessive blinking is a sign of lying, but in my experience, the opposite effect - excessive staring is more telling. Liars typically work hard to control their expression and tend to force their eyes to stay open and appear to stare.
  3. Blinking can also be a sign of unconscious rapport.
  4. Rapid blinking psychologically blocks vision which can an arrogant signal saying "I'm so important, I do not need to see you." When combined with the Driver raised brows, this one seems especially probable.
  5. Cognitive neuroscientist Daniel Smilek at the University of Waterloo, found that blink rate increases when the mind wanders. The brain is actually shutting out information.
The participants blinked more when their minds were wandering than when they were on task, the team reports inPsychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science. “What we suggest is that when you start to mind-wander, you start to gate the information even at the sensory endings — you basically close your eyelid so there’s less information coming into the brain,” says Smilek.

So...when we put all of this together, what can we "read" from Eric Cantor.  He's stressed or uncomfortable, he's a Driver and somewhat arrogant. His blinking wasn't rapport building with David Gregory. I would argue that his mind wasn't wandering either. That just doesn't seem to fit. What do you think?

  1. I feel part of his excessive blinking increased most when he had to think back to specific issues which could be argued that he was filtering out data, thus still making it fit part of Mr. Smiley's theory.
I often catch myself blink more frequently when thinking back on past events. I find it helps me to visualize the event, giving it more vivid detail.

  2. Carly Fiorina is doing exact same thing on mtp today with Chuck Todd. That's why I googled "what does it mean when someone is excessively blinking while talking" thanks for the info. I miss David Gregory. I love Chuck Todd, but he was good too. What happened to him?

    1. If you STILL think Tuck Chodd is a left-winger, I feel pretty confident you don't know the differences between democracy, democratic republic, socialism, communism, capitalism, fascism. He's at a minimum a well-paid pawn of the Ministry of Propaganda--the six corporations who own more than 90% of all entertainment, and broadcast and print news media.

    2. Maybe it's a matter of circumstance? Blinking is normal at any speed I suspect. There are many reasons one might blink seemingly excessively. What excessive blinking means depends on circumstance.

  8. I think you just want to talk. Blinking is a sign of dry eye which is more rampant because of electronics. Blinking doesn't mean stress. Give yourself a rest. That said, I had to keep shutting my eyes that tomato suit was killing me!

  9. Great article, I believe you may be correct in some respects. However, excessive blinking can linked to other physiological disorders or conditions. Arthur John Shawcross was known to blink to excess. He was a serial killer who killed around 14 people. I believe he was trying to shut out life, which was turning against his view.
This is obviously a drastic example, however the same traits of shutting out the world to only encompass your world view may be applicable to other circumstances.

  10. Can you give us an analysis on Trump? I feel he is your typical 'driver' but was crediting his excess blinking to his lying since that is when his answers start to wander.

  11. I think blinking of an eye is connected to the amount of attention your brain pays to something that you are experiencing currently, every time you blink your eyes, your brain either accepts it or neglects it and moves ahead in your state of mind. Excessive blinking of your eyes might just suggest that you are not really interested in the topic or conversation and trying to skip it asap, While low rate of blinking might just suggest that you are keen to know about the topic or the conversation or the person you are making an eye contact with. Its all about neural network function connected involuntarily with your blinking rate, Both eye contact and blinking rate are the most important thing when trying to explain a person about the things you want to express.
